Enchanted Rock Audio Rubbing
On March 5, 2017, I carried a blank 12" record with me as I hiked the various trails surrounding Enchanted Rock State Natural Area. Scuffing, scratching, and etching the surface of the record on the flora, fauna, and rock formations I found along the way, an audio rubbing was produced. More than just a meditation on the physicality of sound, the Enchanted Rock Audio Rubbing explores the folklore and mysticism of the landscape. The Tonkawa people who inhabited the area in the 16th century told stories of unexplained sounds like creaking, groaning, and moaning coming from the rocks. Later, Spanish and Anglo-Texans would attempt to codify the phenomenon of these “crying rocks” with scientific explanations. Nevertheless, the mystery persists and the thrill of unexplained wonder survives deep in the sediment of the place.
